The Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign
Over 12 million African children have lost their parents to the AIDS epidemic, leaving grandmothers to raise orphaned children. Often infirm and impoverished themselves, grandmothers are further disadvantaged by discrimination, denial of rights and lack of resources.
The Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign, launched in Canada by the Stephen Lewis Foundation, is a unique, vibrant and dynamic international movement of grandmothers and grand-others. It supports the dignified and determined African grandmothers in their struggle to raise their grandchildren and provides funds for grassroots projects appropriate to their needs whether practical, medical, social or emotional, for example, seeds for vegetable plots, school uniforms, medical treatment or bereavement counselling. All projects are agreed by community-based organisations in consultation with African grandmothers themselves.
4Gs for Africa
We are a local Surrey group expressing solidarity with the grandmothers of Africa in the fight against AIDS. The Guildford and Godalming Grandmothers’ Group (4Gs) was founded in 2011 as the first UK branch of the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign. We organise activities that help to fund over 300 community projects in 15 countries of sub-Saharan Africa.
